What is FANLit?

FANLit is a knowledge portal of evidence-based food and nutrition literacy resources to support food education.  These resources can be used by school- and community-based educators teaching children & youth ages 4-18. Though our main audience is in Manitoba, Canada, anyone can use them. The portal is a living entity - resources will be added over time as they are developed. 

 

We believe in a holistic approach to food and nutrition education. In addition to food skills and nutrition, FANLit has resources on culture and traditional foods, fostering positive food relationships, and the links between food choices, food production, social justice and our earth.  

FANLit was developed, and is hosted by, the Department of Food and Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada. FANLit is overseen by a Community of Practice consisting of teachers, dietitians and community-based educators. 

Why use FANLit?

 

FANLit has great FREE tools to help you teach food and nutrition:

              Background on food and nutrition literacy, and what children & youth should know about food and nutrition, at                                        different ages. 

             

              Easy-to-use lessons (PDFs or links) on a wide variety of topics. Lesson plans are developed by nutrition students at the                        University of Manitoba, or contributed by educators. There are also links to resources such as curricula that have been                          developed elsewhere, but have excellent content. Everything on FANLit is reviewed and approved by our Community of                          Practice     

     

     Information on the nutritional health and well-being of children and youth.

Anyone interested in teaching children and youth about food and nutrition!


K-12 teachers will find resources and tools that support the Manitoba Home

Economics and Physical Education/Health Education curricula. 
 

Community Educators will find resources and tools to support community-

based food programs

How to use FANLit?

Simply go to the area you are interested in! Teaching resources are grouped by topic

Indigenous Food and Nutrition Teachings

FANLit has resources with Indigenous teachings (identified with an orange dot    ). These resources have been reviewed and approved by the Indigenous food experts on the FANLit Community of Practice.
