FOOD SKILLS (Ages 4-9)

Children learn best about food and nutrition through doing. Hands-on experiences with food are a perfect way of introducing them to the principles in Canada's Food Guide: eating more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, cooking and enjoying food with others.

Cooking in the Classroom without a Kitchen

No Kitchen? No problem! It is possible to prepare food in the classroom. Here is a series of healthy food experiences that can be done with minimal equipment (some lessons require staff oven). See the list of basic tools and equipment and follow the safety and hygiene guidelines.

Diabetes Education Tribal Schools (DETS)

Lesson plans and resources for K-12 on where food comes from, how it grows and how to prepare it. Lessons include: 'Stone Soup', 'Nourishing with Nursery Rhymes', The Big Crunch'.

In Our Own Words curriculum contains a unit called Gifts from the Earth, which includes lessons on growing, measuring and preparing food. Unit 6 also has food and nutrition content.
