SEEDS OF LEARNING

When teaching children about food and nutrition we need to do more than "get cooking". We advocate for a more holistic approach centred on building food literacy. This includes the importance of culture, food relationships and sustainability, and is grounded in child development pedagogy and traditional knowledge.

Below are competency and skill frameworks specific to food and nutrition education for children, which outline age-appropriate skills and knowledge.

These can be used as a ladder to help plan programs that build knowledge, values and skills progressively, and be integrated into other areas of teaching (e.g. mathematics, sciences, geography, environmental studies, land-based learning).
